Statutory Anatomy & Mod 36 Checksum Standard

Under the Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017, the 15-character GSTIN is constructed as:

  • Chars 1–2: Indian State Code per Census 2011 (e.g. 27 = Maharashtra, 29 = Karnataka, 07 = Delhi).
  • Chars 3–12: 10-character PAN of the business entity. 4th character denotes constitution: C (Company), P (Individual), F (Firm/LLP), T (Trust).
  • Char 13: Entity registration number within the state (alphanumeric 1–9, then A–Z).
  • Char 14: Statutory alphabet character 'Z' by default.
  • Char 15: Modulo 36 check-digit calculated over the preceding 14 characters to prevent clerical data-entry errors.
